Stage 6 of the Tour of Britain had an incredibly dramatic finale, with the breakaway caught in the middle of the final sprint. Olav Kooij took the stage win over Fred Wright who had been in the breakaway all day long whilst Romain Grégoire confirmed his overall classification victory.
The final stage of the race began at the Geraint Thomas velodrome with a tribute to the Welshman who is hanging up his wheels today. There were very high speeds early in the day as many tried getting in the breakaway on this short day of racing with the rain also falling down.
Julius Johansen, Fred Wright, Bastien Tronchon and Mats Wenzel formed the day's breakaway and they reached the base of the short but very steep Caerphily Mountain still with a lead over the peloton. Behind Afonso Eulálio attacked, and then Oscar Onley attempted to make the difference towards the summit, but Romain Grégoire followed all attacks and managed to keep the GC group intact over the ascent with 9 kilometers to go, as Wenzel cracked in front but the other three remained at the head of the race with 10 seconds of lead.
Evenepoel tried an attack but followed by Grégoire, and with 4 kilometers to go and the gap to the front bigger, several teams united in trying to bring it back to a sprint - Tudor and Quick-Step specially as without bonifications, it would be impossible to win the overall classification - INEOS, Visma and Israel then led the main chase.
The catch was made with... Meters to the finish line, Tronchon launched his sprint first and Fred Wright then took the front. At the same time, Matthew Brennan launched Olav Kooij's sprint who overtook the Briton already in the sprint. Kooij took he victory ahead of Samuel Watson whilst Wright hung on for third and the GC contenders didn't take bonus seconds.
